A TGirl’s | Trans Girls Guide to Buying the Right Wig

A TGirl’s Guide to Buying the Right Wig.

Beckie Cannons & MissT - Style Director at Hair By MissTresses

At Hair By MissTresses, we pride ourselves in offering the Trans community a wide and diverse selection of suitable wigs, irrespective of a girl’s taste in dress: be it everyday wear, cosplay, secretary or fetish attire we have a wig to suit the occasion.

Understanding the needs of our Tgirl customers and friends is an important part in our customer service charter and we continually try to interact with the TGirl community and find out what girls are looking for, in both styles and service. Buying a wig on line can be a difficult task so we’ve offered up a few tips in helping to save some money and costly bad hair days with a few simple tips. We can’t guarantee you will end up looking like Angelina Jolie or Pippa Middleton but with a good choice of wig we can help you on your way!

Step 1 – Choosing your look.

An understanding of the ‘desired look’ you are trying to achieve is the first step in deciding on the style of wig to invest in.

‘What style of wig will suit me?’ we often get asked and the first reply will be: ‘Who are you wanting to be today?’. Once we have decided on the desired look, we can then start to select the most suitable wig. Once you have found a style and shade that you are comfortable with it makes selecting new styles even easier. Do remember that just as you wouldn’t wear a bikini in the middle of winter, shades and styles of wigs should be adapted to cater for the changing seasons. If you are a regular outdoor wig wearer invest a little more in a lace front or lace cap wig for the added confidence and natural appearance gained from the realistic hairlines these types of wigs create.

That is the beauty of wigs- they can alter your look , mood and public perception of your persona instantly. Investing in a range of quality wigs is an essential part of being a Tgirl today.

Step 2 Assessing your face shape.

Once you have decided on the style you are wanting to create, the next thing to do is look at your face shape after you have applied your make-up (we highly recommend MAC cosmetics) and see if there are any areas you want to highlight or hide. What are your most beautiful, favourite or striking features? It also a good idea to take a few shots of your face from all angles with your mobile phone as this helps you see you as others do – ideal if you are looking to ‘pass’ or go in ‘stealth’ mode.

Below you will find a range of the generic face shapes which are applicable to all genders so you should be able to find the description that best suits your face.

In the same way that every girl should own a LBD (Little Black Dress), we believe that every girl should own a black or blonde bob wig. They are simply brilliant for bad hair days and perfect for all occasions. When you can’t decide on an outfit, try dressing from your wig downwards. Putting on your best frock and heels only to see that the wig you wanted to wear doesn’t suit the style can be an exasperating experience and lead to many ‘absolutely nothing to wear’ moments.

Confidence plays a big part in wearing wigs. If you feel confident in your chosen wig hairstyle you will feel more attractive and passable. It’s also true of the opposite, one of the major ‘tells’ of Transgirls is a bad wig or one that has been poorly cared for. Sometimes it’s difficult to care for a wig properly if it is not stored correctly on a wigstand or mannequin head. If this is the case then simply turn the wig inside out and store in a cool dry place (wig boxes or shoe boxes are perfect).

Once you have decided what face shape you have this his will help determine the most suitable wig for you. We have included tips on hairstyles and celebrity names that should help you match your face shape, we have also added some MissTresses wig design photographs to suit each face shape.

Beckie Cannons from Transtastic.com has happily agreed to model some styles for us and you will see that changes in both colour and style can dramatically alter your appearance. You can see the full article in TVRepartee magazine in the April 2012 edition.

Here’s what Beckie had to say after her visit to Hair By MissTresses one afternoon in March 2012 -

Beckie Cannons at Hair By MissTresses

‘Getting your hair right for your images is so important and spending a little more time getting the perfect wig for you will make all the difference to your confidence. Hair By MissTresses have a massive range and offer a friendly and professional service all at very professional prices. They made me feel very welcome in a really relaxed environment, nothing was too much trouble [ at this point we have to say Beckie is a travelling Tgirl and brought most of her vast wardrobe in dozens of bags, boxes and hangars which filled up the majority of the room, she went through just about everything only to finally select the skimpiest sequinned Topshop dress, semi sheer pantyhose and her gorgeous platform heels as her outfit for the evening, the term 'Typical TGirl!' springs to mind! :-) ] and buying on-line was really and simple to do.’

If you like the Angelina Jolie hairstyle Deep Red wig Beckie choose for her evening out in the Loch Fyne restaurant in Oxford it’s available at Celebwigs.com here

Step 3 Choosing your wig style.
The main facial shape categories generally fall into the following -

Heart Shaped, Round, Oval and Square Shaped.

Heart Face Shape Features.

Your forehead is wider than your jaw and your chin is narrower.

Celebrities with this face shape: Reese Witherspoon, Faith Hill, Heather Graham.

The most flattering heart-shape wig styles are
•Short and full
•Long sides
•Blunt Fringe.

Suggestions- The chin length bob or medium length straight styles are most suited to your face shape. Our most popular wig for customers with this face shape is the enduring Goldie.

Goldie 70's Retro hairstyle wig | Hair By MissTresses

Best Avoided – styles that emphasis your upper face. Don’t wear wig styles with long partings. You mostly likely have prominent cheekbones so stay away from top heavy full wigs.

Round Face Shape Features.

Your face is full and widest at your cheeks, your chin is rounder.

Celebrities with this face shape: Catherine Zeta Jones, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet.

Best round-face hairstyles are
•Long length with wispy sides ['bangs']
•Longer thinner fringe.
•Wigs that finish at the bottom of your chin.

Suggestions – Always try wigs with fullness at the crown such as Fearne. Styles that also work for you are shorter ones such as Chanelle. Any styles that have layers and cut close to your face will add length to your roundness and make your face appear slimmer. Try the inverted bob style such as Alix Vicky or Katie.

Alix inverted bob wig

Best Avoided – styles that contain rounded lines in the edges. Stay away from the pageboy and from centre partings and short cropped wigs, which will make your face appear fuller than it actually is.

Oval Face Shape Features.

Oval faces are long, with a high forehead and narrower chin.

Celebrities with this face shape: Jessica Biel, Jennifer Aniston, Mariah Carey.

Suggested oval styles -
•Long layers
•Slightly off-centre parting.
•Layers that end at your cheek bones.

Suggestions - You are a lucky lady! Since almost all wig styles look good on you, you can wear more hairstyles than almost any other facial structure. You can try short, medium, and long wigs in straight, layered, wavy or curly styles.

Best Avoided - Try to avoid wearing lots of hair on your face- this can make your face appear heavier. If you you do want a face framing style, go for one with razor cut or tapered ends.

Square Face Shapes.

Square face shapes have foreheads and jawline that are about the same width top and bottom.

This is probably the most common shape seen on Tgirls. Celebrities with this face shape: Jessica Simpson, Sandra Bullock, Janet Jackson

Suggested wig styles are -
• Side swept bangs
• Shoulder length wigs
• Short layers

Suggestions- Short hairstyle wigs are made for your face shape. The best styles for your shape include short to medium length in waves and curls, they take the emphasis away from your jawline. To soften your square features, try wigs with layers as well as off-centre or side parting wigs. Don't part your wig in the centre, if the length is too long on the fringe, ask a friendly salon or hairdresser to trim it up for you, it's a quick and simple job.

Best Avoided – Try to avoid long straight wigs as they can make your jawline protrude. Stay away from blunt fringes straight across the forehead, remember centre partings are also best avoided.
Layered bobs finishing above your jaw are great for your face shape.

Lolita Fashion Wigs

One of the most popular trends in wig styles in 2012 so far has  been the Japanese inspired Lolita look with it’s colourful styles and big hair.

Lolita Dolly Wigs | Hair By MissTresses

On a recent trip to Hyper Japan in London we spotted quite a few TGirl Lolitas or ‘BroLitas’ as they are sometime known. The cute dresses and vibrant styles make such a statement it’s easy to see why so many girls enjoy dressing up in some of the many Lolita styles.

The  Lolita style and fashion developed in the late 70′s and quickly spread into Tokyo where it developed into a girls youth fashion culture with many different styles originating in suburbs of the Japanese capital.

The appeal of the style for cross-dressers is obvious as the style exudes a sweetness innocence which can be coupled with a gothic or elegant style. The wigs are huge and colourful, fabulous to wear and are often decorated with bows, hair ornaments and clip in ponytail hairpieces which top off the style perfectly.

A new range of Lolita style wigs in a wide selection of colours was launched at Sparkle in July 2011 by Hair By MissTresses, so popular were the designs that the range has been expanded into a  rainbow burst of shades and become somewhat of a cult purchase by some transgirls in the UK.

You can see the full range of Lolita and Gothic style wigs from Hair by MissTresses or request a catalogue via email if you are unable to order via the internet.

Lace Front Wigs – Why every Transgender Girl should own one

Lace Front Wigs are rapidly becoming a staple part of a T girl’s wardrobe, offering trannies with even limited budgets the benefits of realistic hairlines and incredibly natural feminine looking hair.

When you are en femme, whether your goal is to blend in or stand out from the crowd, a badly fitting or unrealistic looking wig can let you down.  Badly made or synthetic hair pieces made with cheap fibre are easily spotted as being wigs so what is a transvestite girl to do when all you want is for someone to complement your fantastic, natural hairstyle?

The give-away is often not the hairstyle, but the hairline.   To look realistic, a wig has to fit snugly, with no clear “join” between your own skin and the wig- and the answer is….a lace front or lace cap wig.

What is  a Lace Front Wig?

A Lace front wig has a delicate, fine band of durable, neutral coloured lace sewn into the front of the wig, sitting across the forehead from ear to ear.

The lace is trimmed by the wearer to match the natural hairline. This provides a “blending” area between the wig fibre and the skin.  The transparency of the lace, coupled with baby knots of hair sewn into the lace, re-creates with incredibly realism, a naturally occurring hairline.

The join becomes virtually non-detectable with the resulting effect that others will struggle to spot you are wearing a wig and will assume that the hair is all your own!

Styling

Most synthetic wigs have one fixed style (created by sewing the fibre onto the wig cap in a set pattern).  Although this is often a huge plus point, saving valuable time having to style your hair, lace front wigs provide the added benefit of being able to wear the wig off the face and part the hair as real hair.

Secure Fitting

As the lace provides a transparent extension to the normal wig cap, this means a closer and more secure fit .  For those wishing to wear their lace front wig on a longer term basis, specialist wig glue can be used to secure the lace to the hairline enabling the hair to become essentially your own.

Lace front wigs offer TV and TS girls the confidence to wear your wig outdoors, even in blustery conditions.

Who wears Lace Front Wigs?

Originally designed for use in TV, film and on the stage, lace front wigs are now ‘de rigeur’ with pop stars and celebrities, giving them the ability to create new hairstyles without the need to cut, dye or grow their own hair.

The premier market for lace front wigs is the Afro-Caribbean community where some women are unable to grow their hair yet still wish to create long, luxurious hairstyles. Beyonce and Tyra Banks are two of many celebrities who wear lace front wigs.

Many wig manufacturers are now introducing the benefits of Lace Front Wigs to wider markets by adapting fibres, styles and lace colours to suit all skin tones. www.celebwigs.com have a new range of unisex lace front wigs of all lengths and styles to suit TG and TS girls from all backgrounds and ages.

Sharing the secret

Traditionally, lace front wigs were hand-made using human hair costing from hundreds of pounds up to thousands.

However, modern technology means that machine made, synthetic fibre lace front wigs can now be manufactured at a fraction of the cost, but with all of the benefits.

A great quality man-made fibre, like Futura or Kanekalon, has all the appearance of human hair and is also heat friendly, can be mixed in with human hair, meaning you can curl and straighten and style as human hair…but at a fraction of the cost of expensive human wigs!

TV/TS Girls- how to choose a wig to feminise your face

We all have problems choosing a hairstyle to suit us, and the wide range of wigs available on the market often makes that choice even more daunting. Most wig suppliers do not accept returns on wigs that have been worn/used, making the choice of wig even more important.

How do you, as a TS or TV girl, decide what style will suit and feminize your face?

Wigs can dramatically change your appearance, face shape and look. You should take your time getting to know your face shape and choosing the right style for your face. By choosing the correct wig to hide certain parts of your face you are able to draw the eye to your more attractive features.

Choosing a Style

Face Framing or forward style wigs will go a long way to help you achieve a more feminine look while being easy to care for and style.

Many crossdressers, trans people and transvestites may have a prominent bones above the eye sockets or brow. To disguise this masculine feature, it is best to go for a style with a fringe that covers the area and draws the eye down toward the lower part of the face. Choose a wig with more volume on the crown, like the Goldie above,  (as opposed a flat style) which will balance out the size and width of your face.

Wider or square faces can also be altered in appearance by bringing styles closer to the actual face and, as long as the ends are soft the effect can be very dramatic and face framing hairstyle with soft fringe and razor cut ends. A wig with whispy layers which frame the face can mask many masculine features such as wide jaw line or prominent brow.

Long Hair is generally taken to be more feminine and it is much easier to appear and feel more feminine with a longer style. In general, the shorter the style, the more attention is drawn to the face so avoid shorter styles if possible.  If you like the effect of curly hair, choose a wig that has relaxed curls like the Fearne (left) which provides volume but does not create too “big” an effect.

Choosing a colour

Most TS/TV girls make the mistake of choosing a colour that they like rather than what would suit their skin tone. For as natural a look as possible to “pass”,  stick to as close to your natural colour as possible.  Going for an outrageous colour or an overly luxurious or glamorous wig will only draw unwanted attention to yourself- for some that might be the desired effect but not necessarily when doing your food shopping in Tesco!

Have a search on the internet for girls who have similar colouring and skin tone to you and see what colours suit them.

If you have naturally mid brown- dark brown/black eyes and eyebrows, stick to darker wig colours with highlights or deep red colours.

If you have blonde to light brown natural hair colour and eyebrows, stick to the lighter colours on the spectrum or possibly ginger colours.

Gone are the day of buying one wig for £100+ (USD$150+) which has to last you for a good few years.  These days, realistic  man-made fibres such as kanekelon mean that great quality, modern and stylish wigs can be yours for less than £30 ($50). This means that you can change your looks regularly to suit your mood!

Make-overs and wig advice

Many wig stores, such as ours, are incredibly TV/TS friendly.  Email us a photo of yourself and we will happily suggest some styles for you- making your wig buying experience stress-free.  Someone will hold your hand and advise you the whole way!

If you are able to treat yourself, there are increasingly more make-over services providing a one-stop shop for a head to toe feminization treatment. You will be given advice on hair, make-up, underwear , clothes and shoes to go away and experiment with, giving you greater confidence to explore your feminine self.

Face Framing Wigs for Transvestites

Wigs can dramatically change your appearance, face shape and look. You should take your time getting to know your face shape and choosing the right style for your face.

Face Framing or forward style wigs will go a  long way to help you achieve a more feminine look while being easy to care for and style.

Many crossdressers, trans people and transvestites may have a prominent bones above the eye sockets or brow, some times call brow bossing. If you need to cover this area then best to go for a style with a fringe that covers the area and draws the eye down toward the lower part of the face.

Farrah is a good example of a wig style that helps cover the forehead and has enough layered volume to counter any wide jawline with out totally hiding it.
